We’re pretty quick to call companies out when they make decisions that don’t work for cruisers, so Starlink deserves some credit here.
When they announced that Roam Unlimited would be limited to 30 days outside your home country, with the only reset being a return home, full-time cruisers had a problem. The alternative was a commercial offshore plan that was far too expensive for most cruising boats.
Cruisers spoke up. Social media got loud, Riley from La Vagabonde joined in, and Starlink responded with Personal Maritime. It cost more, but it gave us the kind of practical service we had been asking for.
Then they limited it to boats under 40 feet.
Cruisers spoke up again, and Starlink listened again. The limit was raised to 60 feet, bringing far more long-term cruising boats into the plan.
We’re a very small part of Starlink’s customer base, but they heard us twice and made changes fairly quickly.
We rely heavily on Starlink while cruising, and that kind of response goes a long way toward restoring our faith in the company.
